Arekasa Residence

Named for the areca palm — a favourite of the client — Arekasa Residence is a private home near Kedungu Beach, designed as a sunlit, breezy retreat for family life and pets. The house borrows Japanese thresholds and Balinese material culture in equal measure: arrival is through a genkan-like entrance, then the house opens up — an open kitchen and dining room, a sunken living room, and three bedrooms arranged across two structures, with a gym above the garage.

Architecture, interior, and landscape are treated as one composition. Gardens, terraces, an outdoor lounge, and the pool thread between the two buildings, with landscape design by Namlia Mahabba. Large openings carry daylight and cross-ventilation through the plan, tempered by filtered timber screens and glazed roof elements.

Materials favour reuse and regional stone: reclaimed ironwood and recycled ulin decking, teak and timber screens, ulin shingles, vintage timber doors, andesite, limestone, sandstone, and Sukabumi stone, with limewashed walls and clay and cementitious tiles.
