Soogi Roll

Soogi Roll is the renovation of an existing Korean restaurant in Canggu — roughly 125 square metres reimagined through a contemporary reading of the hanok, carrying the atmosphere of the restaurant’s previous life into a new frame without losing its soul.

Raised timber seating recalls the cheong-maru; tatami-inspired flooring, Korean calligraphy, and the owner’s own photo collection give the room its cultural narrative; hanging lanterns and planter boxes soften the edges and blur the line between dining room and tropical outdoors.

The project treats what existed as material: the cashier counter and dining furniture were adapted and reused rather than replaced, joined by new wall panels, cabinetry, benches, and a terracotta-tiled bar. Completed in 2026. Photography by Manik Suryawan.
